Getting Started using Randomizer

After you have downloaded and installed the application, you are ready to start generate random results.

Preparations

The application is bundled with 12 different sample categories just to demonstrate the potential of the Randomizer and to get you started using it. Before you create your own categories, you can try the application and generate random results from the following sample categories: Countries, Dates, Deep_Thoughts, Hours(24), Minutes, Months, Movies, Music_Albums, Names, Restaurants, Things_to_do & Weekdays.

Start by creating your own category in the applications sub-directory "RandomFiles". You can edit and change the content of any of the existing files, or simply create your own files in this directory that will be accessible by the Randomizer application. These files can be opened with notepad or any text file editor of your choice.

Using the Application

  1. Start the application.
  2. Select one or more categories to randomize.
  3. Select the number of random results you want the application to generate.
  4. Optionally, select "Allow Duplicates".
  5. Hit the "GO" button and you will have your random results generated from the categories that you selected.

Create Random files to use with the application

You might want to create your own categories to generate and randomize data from.
As the Randomizer application get its input from basic text files, this can easily be accomplished by simply creating new files or by modifying the already existing files.

Suppose that you want to create a new category containing names of different colors to use with the Randomizer.

  • From Windows, open Notepad.
  • Type the name of the colors you want to be able to randomize, one color per line, for example:
    Red
    Green
    Blue
    Black
    White
  • When you are done with the content, you will have to save the file with the ".random" extension so that the file will be accessible from the Restarter application.
  • From within Notepad, chose "Save As..." from the "File" menu.
  • Browse to the directory "RandomFiles" which is a sub-directory of where you installed the Randomizer application.
  • From the "Save As" dialog in Notepad
  • In the "File name" field, type Colors.random
  • From the "Save as type" drop down list, chose "All Files".
  • Click the Save button and you are done.

Your newly created file should now be accessible from the Randomizer application. If you can't see the file, refresh the contents or restart the application.

Note

The only real limit to the Randomizer is your imagination.
You can create any category with any content and combine the randomized results any way you like. Feel free to experiment and play around with the bundeled sample categories to see the full potential of the application and discover different scenarios where this application can be useful for you.
